MERCY Day 2014 was an amazing time of serving for the Washington, DC International Christian Church!!!
Genesis 11:6
The Lord said, “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.
Today over 90 volunteer disciples and their friends and children turned out as one people with one purpose to serve the students and staff Myrtilla Elementary School in Washington, DC at our 6th Annual International Day of MERCY. The school is located in NE Washington, Dc and servers approximated 460 students, many of whom are underprivileged. Unlike the people at the Tower of Babel, we were united for the right reason – to glorify God though our sacrifice of service to the needy and less fortunate. Although our start time was 9:30 am, many of our disciples were on-site long before then. After donning our T-Shirts and being unified in prayer and worship, as one people we joyfully spread out to tackle our assigned tasks given by Mrs. Donnita Tabron, the school liaison. You name it, we did it!
10 class rooms were relocated with the assistance of the teachers; class rooms and music rooms were cleaned and reorganized; gym floors were mopped, bleachers were swept and mopped, custodian areas were reorganized and shelves that seemed to not have been dusted for years were cleaned down; the fish pond and reptilian cages were cleaned. Disciples mowed lawns, tilled the soil, planted flowers, and beautified the entrance to the school.
After a short lunch break, during which the school provided a meal for the volunteers we went back to work to complete the task. We literally setup a “chair wash” outside which involved almost half the team. Some sprayed, some scrubbed, others hosed, some dried, and others stacked almost two hundred chairs, singing songs as we worked and encouraged one another and God gave us perfect weather!
Our joy was so evident that a neighbor brought her 15 year old son to ask if he could work with us, and Mrs. Tabron’s (project liaison) nine year old daughter, brought joy to us as she insisted that she wanted a green shirt so that she could serve too. Our visitors exclaimed “Wow! christians do have fun.”
Mrs. Tabron summed it all up with these words “Today is a glorious day! I can’t thank you all enough for coming to serve us. Everyone was joyful and worked hard and fast, and I did not hear one person complain. I look forward to working with you again!”
Our goal was met and God was glorified.
Amen
